Digital Shift (All events were FREE to attend)

The theme “Shift” evokes a positive disruption towards greater access, inclusivity, equity and diversity in the media arts community and beyond; movement towards decolonized thinking; and a shift to digital means of creation, collaboration and dissemination. In June 2018, IMAA held its national conference entitled “listen, witness, transmit” which was coordinated by NIMAC and focused on Indigenous leadership, creation, and ways of working within the media arts sector. This theme challenged the media arts community to address colonial impact within the sector and to undertake significant systemic change. Digital Shift seeks to respond to this call to action.

Due to our concerns around safety during Covid -19, the entire Gathering took place online. Digital Shift comprised of six weekly round-table discussions, held online from 10am -12pm (Pacific time) each Thursday from September 17 to October 22, 2020. Each round-table was followed by a virtual break-out session, where participants gathered discussions on issues raised during the conversation.

The six weekly round-tables focused on Indigenous digital sovereignty; racial justice and inclusivity; access and inclusion, especially in regards to remote and underserved communities; artists’ digital rights, including fair artists fees for digital works; art, privacy and surveillance; and AI, biotechnology and the Semantic web. Digital Shift also showcased the work of artists from the Pacific Region (BC and the Yukon) through a rotating weekly program of film screenings, online artists’ works, and virtual walks by artists through different territories within the region.

More information on the round-tables and artistic programming on the Digital Shift’s website here

Digital Shift was hosted by the FLUX Media Gallery, which is situated on the ancestral and un-ceded territories of the Songhees and Esquimalt First Nations, including the WSANEC peoples of the Pauquachin, Tsartlip, Tseycum and Tsawout First Nations (Victoria BC).

Digital Shift Virtual National Media Arts Gathering was being hosted by The Independent Media Arts Alliance (IMAA) in partnership with Flux Media Gallery, the Media Arts Alliance of the Pacific (MAAP) and the National Indigenous Media Arts Coalition (NIMAC)

IMAA Conference Open Forum June 18, 2012: Summary Notes

SOURCE: National Media Arts Summit BANFF June 15 – 18th 2012

What is source?

The theme “Source” stems from the Banff springs and flows through multiple interpretations including source of creativity and ideation which is the foundation from which all media artists and administrators work.

In June 2010, the IMAA held its national conference entitled ON Fire which looked at the burning issues within the media arts.  Water as a metaphor will respond to this by dousing its delegates in outstanding keynotes, interactive discussions, film screenings, performances, and media art installations in various venues at the Banff Centre.
